Beyond Installation. Redefining Day 2 Support

The Myth of the Completed Project

By Garrett Polo, Sr. Engineering Strategist, Connectivity Solutions

“Day 2” often refers to that period after a project team’s handoff to the client. Some may look at it as a time of passive monitoring and periodic, costly “break-fix” contracts. But in the world of billion-dollar sports and entertainment venues, Day 2 represents a critical shift from being a client’s contractor to their partner and on-call expert.

On Day 2, mega event venues go from static structures to living, breathing environments, with invisible utilities, from ticketing to concessions, that transport thousands of fans from street to seat. A dynamic environment like this requires more than a vendor; it demands on-site advocates who can easily pivot from design and installation to onsite management.

An Empty Venue Is Only the Beginning

After construction, our engineers and team members conduct “empty facility commissioning” and establish performance baselines.  Then, using a three-event optimization cycle, we work to bridge the gaps between an empty venue and a packed house. By the third event, the system is optimized for maximum performance and ready to go. We work on things, such as dedicating wireless channels for faster ticketing and providing on-site support. All the while, we are actively monitoring the RF spectrum to ensure a cohesive fan experience.

Where Performance Comes to Life

Day 2 arrives and our dedication to venue health extends into real-time optimization. A core metric of ours, “Meantime to Innocence,” is a tongue-in-cheek term for the speed at which we prove a system’s stability. Ahead of a recent major event at a busy West Coast arena, we pinpointed and refined back-end server configurations. Thanks to our quick work and full collaboration with the client, the venue’s digital infrastructure performed at its best when it mattered most, reinforcing an uninterrupted fan experience.

Advocacy Elevates Support

Beyond basic maintenance, Day 2 is about being the client’s advocate and ensuring technology consistently meets and exceeds the highest standards. Rather than relying solely on standard support channels, we take initiative and act as a true partner alongside both our clients and the technology providers.

During a 6GHz build at one venue, we identified six critical bugs. While these issues had not yet been widely observed, we partnered with the manufacturer to expand the review, which ultimately uncovered similar challenges in other environments.

By proactively identifying opportunities and working collaboratively to address them, we help drive continuous improvement to unlock a system’s full potential and optimize network performance.

Engineering Beyond the System

Day 2 sometimes carries us beyond a project’s technical aspects and into the unique organizational dynamics of high-stakes venue/user environments. We must become partners and collaborators who offer honest, expert guidance to powerful stakeholders. Working alongside our clients as teammates, we often transform some of Day 2’s more intimidating challenges into joint successes.

Turning the Bleeding Edge into Proven Performance

Our relationships and tight feedback loop with some of the world’s leading communications equipment manufacturers enables us to offer our clients a reliable “bleeding edge” advantage. When we are problem solving and troubleshooting, we often provide the manufacturers with raw data from our field testing. With that, they refine their algorithms, and we then deploy tasks and identify specific breaking points. This ongoing dialogue with the tech developers allows us to continuously improve the product and ensure long-term success for our clients and the industry at large.

Day 2 Defines the Project

Successful Day 2 support is where everything comes together. It’s where engineering and design are put into action, where performance is tested in real conditions, and where partnerships truly prove their value.

At MSB, we see Day 2 as an extension of the work that starts long before opening day. We design with these moments in mind and stay involved to make sure systems perform the way they were intended to. That means working alongside our clients to fine-tune, adapt, and continuously improve.

In the end, success isn’t just what was built behind the scenes, it’s what holds up under pressure when thousands of fans are counting on it.
