Jefferson Parish Names M S Benbow & Associates to Oversee 5G Wireless Network Assessment

Ultra-fast 5G wireless network will usher in advancements such as smart meters, VR and new era of the Internet of Things (IoT)

METAIRIE, LA. —(April 21, 2020)—MSB Consulting Engineers telecommunications engineering division will lead Jefferson Parish’s 5G cellular network assessment under a two-year contract to provide technical analysis services to develop a framework for deployment of the next generation of ultra-fast wireless connections.

Telecommunications firms say 5G will increase web browsing speed to 8x the current capacity and allow for the evolution of Smart Cities that will usher in technical advancements such as smart meters, self-driving cars, virtual reality and a new era of the Internet of Things (IoT).

MSB is a leading telecommunications engineering provider and member of the CBRS Alliance, a wireless industry collaborative aimed at advancing CBRS spectrum inbuilding, public space, industrial IoT and 5G networks.

Services will include providing site surveys in environments including outdoors, indoor in public venues, and on rooftops and other locations for wireless antenna installations, as well as reviewing applications and technical specifications for locating small cell nodes, equipment and antennas.

Ultra-fast 5G Network Ushers in Smart Cities, Technological Advancement

The parish’s “Envision Jefferson 2040 Comprehensive Plan” touts transitioning from traditional institutions to online business approaches using advanced technologies such as 5G to facilitate automatic, connected communication such as among transportation infrastructure and vehicles; real-time remote healthcare; and remote delivery approaches for administering regulations, programs and procedures. AT&T has launched their 5G network in 20 cities, and Verizon has expanded to 30 cities as of December 2019.

MSB has provided land use and zoning regulation services in the past for both Jefferson Parish and many other surrounding parishes related to telecommunications infrastructure projects. The engineering firm has managed several mission-critical telecom infrastructure projects in Jefferson Parish, including wireless network expansions at West Jefferson Medical Center, East Jefferson Hospital and Louis Armstrong International Airport; Gretna Police Department’s 911 Call Center Expansion; and deployment of the Louisiana Region One Interoperable Communications System.

The regional multi-agency public safety radio network was the first region in the country to implement a project of this magnitude in 2009. It provides emergency communications for police, fire and medical service providers in the four southern Louisiana parishes of Orleans, Plaquemines, Jefferson, and St. Bernard
