MSB Continues Partnership with YouthForce Nola Internship Program

August 9, 2019

Collaboration with City of New Orleans provides experience in STEM fields

METAIRIE, LA. — (August 9, 2019)— MSB Consulting Engineers is proud to continue our partnership with the YouthForce NOLA Internship Program (YFI) for the second year. This program aims to help youth make connections and acquire long-term employment opportunities with local companies in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Under the program, MSB has hired a New Orleans high school student for a summer internship at the multi-discipline engineering consultancy.

The program is a collaboration between the City of New Orleans and the YouthForce Collaborative Steering Committee that provides paid internship experiences for students considering STEM industries. It aims to help students develop the skills necessary for success in the workforce as well as high school and college. Students receive 60 hours of paid training before beginning their 90-hour placement with their specific company.

MSB’s intent for the internship is to deliver an immersive, interactive experience rather than simply observing. MSB’s summer YouthForce NOLA intern will spend one week in each of the firm’s three engineering disciplines—Electrical Power Systems, Instrumentation & Controls, and Telecommunication & Technology—followed by a final week in Human Resources, Administration and Drafting & Design. During the internship the student will gain insight into the day-to-day activities involved in a STEM profession as well as general office experience, such as how to send emails, punctuality and taking notes.

This is MSB’s second year offering a YFI internship as the company continues a long history of supporting STEM programs and promoting STEM careers across Louisiana.

“Participating in this program supports MSB’s mission to give back to the community while fulfilling one of our company’s core values,” said MSB President Leo L. Holzenthal, Jr. “Our internship is designed to provide exposure into how an engineering firm works, including the fundamentals of running a business and demonstrating the importance of collaboration to complete a project. We aim to show how each role in a STEM field plays an integral role in successfully identifying and solving complex problems that the work is addressing.”
