MSB Recognized by Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport as Passenger Services Partner of the Year
DALLAS, TEXAS—(April 14, 2011)—The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has honored MSB Consulting Engineers (MSB) as 2010 Passenger Services Corporate Partner of the Year for the successful management of a multi-year expansion project to achieve superior cellular coverage at DFW.
One of the busiest airports in the world, DFW served more than 57 million travelers in 2010. Wireless technology continues to evolve, and DFW in conjunction with the major wireless cellular carriers embarked on an airport-wide Distributed Antenna System (DAS) upgrade in 2009. The upgrade to the system now provides multi-frequency, multi-technology services to passengers and DFW operations personnel and has allowed DFW to become one of the first indoor wireless systems to deploy commercially available 700 Mhz, Long Term Evolution (LTE) services. The upgrade includes enhanced service to five terminals, Parking Garages, and the Hyatt Hotel. MSB was selected to design, engineer and manage the overall system deployment. In addition to the design and construction phase of the project, MSB provides ongoing maintenance and support for the network.
MSB also negotiated agreements with the wireless carriers to fund and implement the DAS system. The upgrade consisted of over 320 remote electronic units, 1920 antennas, ten (10) miles of high-density fiber cable, 25 miles of composite fiber cable, and remote monitoring and alarming for increased reliability.
The in-building implementation increased cellular coverage at DFW from 25% to 95% of the facility, increased passenger satisfaction and provided additional concession revenue to the airport due to the expanded cellular coverage area.
“Our goal for this project was to provide turn-key solutions to improve airport preference and customer satisfaction. The upgrade also enhanced wireless services for DFW operations and emergency personnel, providing a reliable and robust wireless system to improve operations, ” said MSB President and Engineering Manager Leo L. Holzenthal, Jr., P.E., who serves as project manager.
MSB has completed more than 50 telecom projects and has worked on numerous large-scale DAS and other communications infrastructure projects for such airport facilities as Houston Hobby Airport, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, and New Orleans International Airport. In addition to DFW, MSB engineered, built and manages the telecom infrastructure at the nearby American Airlines Center entertainment venue. MSB has worked on projects to implement or enhance cellular coverage in large-scale venues such as airports, hotels, arenas and convention centers throughout the Gulf South.
